Please, stop what you’re doing. This is important.

It’s important even if you believe your business is a fortress and that you have all the cybersecurity protocols you need in place.

54 per cent of businesses we surveyed – and who believed they were adequately protected – were found to be at serious risk. They had an open back door.

In many of these cases, the businesses weren’t ignoring cyber threats. They had protocols in place. They had certifications, standards and security software. They believed they’d done enough. But they’d focused, as many do, on external threats, and forgotten that, often, it’s people within an organisation who allow those external threats to gain entry.

Consider the diligent team member who – swamped with countless logins – decides to save their passwords in a document. It seems harmless, but it’s the equivalent of leaving a window ajar in an otherwise secure building. To a cybercriminal, it’s a goldmine.‌ What’s more, it undermines all your other cybersecurity measures, potentially leading to data breaches, non-compliance fines and a tarnished reputation.

‌Addressing this particular risk is relatively simple:

  1. Educate your team about the dangers of improper password storage
  2. Use a centrally managed Password Manager platform to ensure passwords are secured but accessible to the right people, even if someone leaves the team.
  3. Conduct regular audits to check for unsecured password files.

‌Looking at the internal aspect of your security isn’t about blaming staff or introducing a climate of mistrust. It’s about closing gaps, reinforcing your defences and building a culture of security awareness.

Of course, it’s not easy when you’re on the inside to identify hidden risks. 54 per cent of our survey respondents missed something significant. That’s why a cybersecurity review can be invaluable, providing crucial insights into weaknesses and showing you how to protect your business against threats – whatever their source.
